Why I want a ipad
During the last week we saw why the iPad will be good for contractors and why not be the target audience for the device. After considerable thought, I'd like to share with you why I want an iPad.
I'm not a fan of Apple – the only Apple device that has an iPod now 4 years old refurbished Nano. I do not carry an iPhone – I use a Samsung Ace smartphone Windows Mobile. I still like the device because it is small and has a battery for my travels. I recently scolded for not using Keynote for my presentations. My Team is a renovated main Dell XPS M1330 laptop that I have enjoyed throughout the year, although lately the fan has made so much noise that I can not take him to SXSW me. I've been thinking about buying the new Asus ULvt30 it has a great battery and looks like it might meet my needs well.
So why What I want the Apple iPad? He has been beaten from blog to blog and fanboys are burned their sanctuaries to Steve Jobs. (side note, I wonder if the fanboys would have loved the device if Jobs gave one to everyone in the audience. You know, like Google did with the nexus one. I have not seen so much hatred rather than the way, did ya?)
The Asus weighs just under 4 pounds. It has great specifications and work perfectly for encoding, working on my home, and all other heavy work that a computer has intended to handle. Everyday I am in New York at an event, a gathering of entrepreneurs seeking advice or meeting with a client in my home. Many times, it would be good have a device that can strike a second and show my home, look to other startups, reviewing a presentation, etc. I usually use my mobile phone to control my different email accounts and surf the web with the Skyfire mobile browser. The iPad will handle everything I've listed and more and I can travel around with a machine than 1.5 pounds. If I take the laptop with me, is to carry heavy equipment around 3x and then I also have to take a bigger (and more heavy) laptop bag too. The iPad fit in my bag light without problems.
ReadWriteWeb had an interesting post about how the iPad will new businesses to create "instant demos. I strongly agree with this premise and could see that just bought new businesses to the ability of demonstration.
I also hope we can use the iPad as my new music playing device where I can start a playlist "maintain" the device and into my bag and the music keeps playing.
Based on what I read, it seems that I will have some complaints with the device. First, no camera – a camera would have been great for networking and I'm guessing it will be in version 2 – not that the jobs created their devices? Jobs says the battery will last 10 hours, which probably means 3-4 in real life. I certainly hope that the power cord is super light and easy to carry. The iPad also apparently can not handle multiple tasks that seems stupid, because they often have to surf the web and listen to a song in your library iTunes. There seems to be an issue in Flash not working in the IPAD – not sure how this will affect my use of the Web, but it's something to consider.
Date Update: The comments seem to indicate that it can play a song in iTunes and work in the browser.
From what I can tell so far, The iPad also could improve my productivity while I'm out and because I can load up on applications that can be used to keep better track of everything happens in my life, from programming to taking notes in touch with management.
It seems there are adapters that plug into the iPad to allow some functions external. I hope that a folding keyboard is one of those options. Unfortunately, it seems that you can carry a second battery. It would be great if you can connect the iPad in a projector for large group demonstrations and presentations.
Not sure if I will buy the 3G model. Ace tie my Bluetooth phone and handles very well I could only use it when necessary. I guess you can not add to 3G later so my impression is that I will take the 3G version. I'm pretty sure will go for the cheaper version. The 3G service plans seem expensive for me – especially since if you only use one drop, you still pay for the entire month. In fact, I'm willing to bet that one of the strengths of the iPad will be for people who are happy with your cell phone, but we want a smarter way without buying a iPhone device or robot.
So to sum up why I want an iPad:
- light
- ability to review and respond to customer emails and manage research for my startup
- web browser
- Productivity Applications
- the functionality of the meeting (presentation of examination, review of applications, discussions)
- long battery life
- player new music to replace my old Nano
I would also point out that I'm sure there are other tablet machines in the market worth considering. Not yet begun, but this research before you plan to watch the iPad for purchase.
If the device can be acquired before SXSW, my bet is that you would see 1,000 or more of the devices in the convention center.
The iPad would also replace my desire to move to a new mobile device this year. If I have a iPad that binds me and my cell phone to manage calls (which Sprint is perfect), then I am ready.
In general I think the iPad will be a huge winner for Apple. Ithink the price will drop a bit at mid-year to get more mainstream users excited the device. Now I have to work on getting more page views so I can pay for the new iPad device.
