hybrid car batteries
Does anyone know of any research on the downstream pollution effects of discarded batteries in Hybrid cars?
I’m looking into buying a Hybrid for my next car, but I’m not sure there’s been enough thought given to the waste generated by the batteries. Can old batteries be safely recycled?
My friends who bought Hybrids in the past 4-5 years are smug about how green they are. I’ve been driving the same Volvo sedan since 1994, just hit 150K miles, and the smog inspector tells me it has the lowest possible tailpipe emission for a non-Hybrid vehicle. I’d like to see some hard evidence that the auto industry has thought about safe methods for handling all the batteries in Hybrids when they start wearing out.
Toyota have a full recycling policy for all their new cars, including the NiCads.
the Infernal combustion engine part is harder to recycle because it contains lots of composite materials, and petrochemical contaminants.
Ideally we should have pure electric with Li-ion batteries, those in the Phoenix SUT, www.phoenixmotors.com, have a predicted 20 year life.
