Battery in a cup with salt and water?

What happens over a period of time if you put a nine-volt battery in a glass cup with salt and water? It makes bubbles is all I know, and then it starts turning murky; what would happen if it was in there for, say, hours?

The chemical energy of the battery is turned into electrical energy which creates a redox reaction in the water. The water dissociates 2H20 > 2H2 + 02. The oxygen loses electrons (oxidation) and the hydrogen gains the electrons (reduction). The bubbles you see are the gases being formed. The murkiness forms from side reactions with whatever ions are dissolved in the water. Eventually, as the energy in the battery is used up, all the reactions will stop.
